Vasque Men's Juxt Multi-Sport Shoe Review

Vasque Men's Juxt Multi-Sport Shoe Review

A couple of years ago I was looking for a new pair of sneakers that would be comfortable enough to wear everyday but be durable enough to be considered a hiking shoe.

Now, there are about a million different options out there, so I spent my time and looked at a bunch of different brands.

One day I had the idea to do an internet search for "Navy SEAL shoes" to see what the team guys wear.

(I say "one day" but I was in the middle of reading Breaking BUD/S: How Regular Guys Can Become Navy SEALs - a fun read but, warning, non-PC salty language lies therein!)

BTW If you buy anything from the links we provide on this page we might get a small percentage of the sale. For more info click here.

A couple of sites had some lists of mostly boots, which wasn't what I was looking for but one entry caught my eye and it was the Vasque Men's Juxt Multi-Sport Shoe.

Apparently these were the shoes SEAL Team Six were wearing in Abbottabad when they took out Bin-Laden.

Didn't care too much about that but the Juxt had all the right features on paper: open ankle, light-weight, durable, reinforcements in the right places, and a solid sole built for traction.

So two years ago I bought a pair, and worn them a lot: around town, traveling, and at the gym.

Enough so that I think it's fair enough to give them a proper review.

So without further ado...

Toughness

Let's start with the durability. I like durable because I hate buying new stuff every year. Especially footwear.

Also, lets not forget that we want durable things in an emergency situation, can't have stuff fall apart when you need it most.

The Vasque Juxt are made with 1.6mm Suede Leather. Leather is good, it's stronger than other materials. Old school.

The soles are made from Vibram Off-The-Grid outsoles. They are pretty aggressively shaped and have held up really well.

Vibram is known for making good stuff and Vasque has been around forever, and they always made gret shoes.

Red Wing bought them and moved some of the manufacturing to China, so some of the craftsmanship has dropped off on some models, but that doesn't appear to be the case with the Juxt.

I've worn these to Crossfit 2x a week for over a year and put a lot of running miles on them. No problems.

I've taken them hiking in different terrains. Always had good grip no matter the situation.

I like the way the toe was made and the way the laces come all the way down there. Gives them a little extra support in the front.

Speaking of the toe box, there is nice rubber reinforcement along the front. Adds a little extra protection to the shoes you don't normally see outside of boots.

Comfort

Are they comfortable? I think so.

They are leather, so aren't as supple as a sneaker made from poly materials, but not as rough as boots.

You can wear thinner socks like the Darn Tough Coolmax and not have any problems for day hikes. If you are going to put some mileage on then get thicker socks.

I have a wide foot (OK, Hobbit feet to be honest) and a size 10 wide fits me well even though I would normally fit in a 9.5 EE. That little extra room feels nice when I need thicker socks.

As I mentioned before, I would run several miles in them at a time, and although they are heavier than most running shoes, they weren't noticeably slowing me down.

You can see a little sagging in this photo along the sides just above the sole. This is from my wide-ass feet, no fault of the shoe.

Price / Availability

There are some crazy expensive shoes out there, sheesh. Luckily the Vasque Juxt aren't horrible. Retail price is $109 but you can usually find them on Amazon for around $90.

Looking at eBay, I see a bunch have sold in the mid-$30's for lightly used pairs. So if you are on the fence that could be worth a shot.

Conclusion

Overall I am really happy with the Vasque Juxt shoes. They look cool in jeans and shorts, and don't scream "hiking boot."

They are durable enough and have held up well enough for me to put trust into them as part of my kit in an emergency situation. In fact as of the past year or so that's exactly the role they play, as part of my bug out kit.

And most importantly, I will buy another pair when these finally do bite the dust. That's about the highest praise I can give a product.

Give them a shot if you're in the market for a shoe like this, I think you'll agree.
